We are excited to introduce and feature Lindsay Nason, Marketing & Operations Associate in today’s Meet the Team.
Lindsay has a passion for empowering others through storytelling and enhancing experiences. She optimizes operations, executes marketing plans and assists with client engagements. Lindsay brings a variety of technical and strategic skills, which she has developed through her experience working in community economic development, project management, and digital marketing. She graduated from the University of San Diego with a degree in Marketing and acts on her passion to empower individuals and build community as a mentor at East High School and volunteer for Women’s Wilderness.
Now, it’s time to hear from Lindsay.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in marketing?
I’ve always been curious about understanding human behavior: what motivates us, why we do the things we do, and ultimately understanding people and their stories. I think that curiosity and the psychology behind marketing is what initially drew me to it.
As I started to get more exposed to the marketing world, I saw a good and bad side. Marketing can often be seen in a negative light, and unfortunately because a lot of people use it as a ploy to get people into purchasing something they didn’t really want or need. However, there is also an ethical and respectful way to do marketing. A way that is driven by building trust, connection and providing value. A way that has a genuine intent of helping others by understanding their world view and needs. Taking that approach is what inspired me to continue to pursue a career in marketing.
Q: How have the roles you’ve held in the past contributed to how you work now?
The common thread that has remained consistent throughout all my roles is understanding the importance of listening. When we listen to our clients, communities, or other stakeholders, we can better understand their needs. Once we establish a better understanding, then we can build trust and connection allowing us to respond in a more intentional and impactful way.
In addition to how we listen, it’s equally important to focus on who we are listening to. If we fail to listen and engage with the communities we are trying to serve, then we cannot provide true value and meet their needs in the right ways.
Q: What are your top 3 favorite podcasts/books/blogs to follow?
I’m going to list four here 🙂
- Radio Ambulante – Great way to practice my Spanish listening skills, as well as hear engaging stories form the Latin community. It’s the Spanish version of This American Life
- Akimbo – A podcast from the marketing guru, Seth Godin. “It’s a podcast about our culture and about how we can change it.”
- Farnam Street – I subscribe to their newsletter “Sunday Brain Food” and listen to their podcast, “The Knowledge Project.” Both are full actionable ideas and insights on productivity, mental models, decision making and learning.
- Total Annarchy by Ann Hadley – This is a great newsletter to subscribe to for writers, content developers and marketers. Lots of great insights, and applicable writing tips.
Q: What is something people in your industry/niche have to deal with that you want to fix?
Vanity metrics. When it comes to data and the social sector, there is a lot of pressure to “prove” impact. As a result, we tend to look at, or are asked to track, metrics that make us look good to others (aka vanity metrics) instead of looking at metrics that will help us learn and inform future decisions. On a personal, organizational and sector level, I think we get too fixated on the short-term game, looking for quick wins, instead of keeping a consistent practice, which ultimately will make a greater impact in the long-run.
Q: What are your hobbies?
I grew up in the Sierra Nevada’s in California, so many of my hobbies revolve around mountain sports: skiing, hiking, mountain biking and camping. These are some of my top favorite outdoor hobbies, but I also enjoy practicing Spanish, journaling, and perfecting my morning coffee.
Q: Describe your job in 3 words.
Q: What do you appreciate most about working at ResultsLab?
There are a lot of great things about ResultsLab, but one of the things I appreciate most is the team and workplace culture. I’m surrounded (virtually) by coworkers who are motivated and engaged, with a strong sense of camaraderie around the work we are doing. Additionally, the culture of the workplace is driven by learning. As employees, we are encouraged to challenge ourselves and push the boundaries, even if that means “mistakes” will be made along the way. Instead of a “mistake” being seen as a failure, they are seen as opportunities to learn and grow from.
